Knife Sheaths

KNIFE SHEATHS

The knife sheath on the left is a southern plains design with tent with a dark blue star design in the center.  This examples may date to the late 1800s. The knife sheath on the right have diagonal squares that may suggest a Cheyenne design with tents along the boarder.  The addition of tassels indicate a Dakota Sioux origin.  This example is may date to the 1900s.

This knife sheath was reportedly made for the ghost dance ceremony. The beaded patterns were abandoned in preference for the rawhide materials that were more quickly made.
This sheath bears a very similar pattern as a pair of moccasins from the Tom Flicht collection. The star symbol appears at the top with the tent symbols around the boarder similar to a Cheyene design. Plains Indians (c. late 1800s)
