The hafted maul or hammer stone is not an axe form.The hafted maul to the left (figure 1) has been carefully pecked and ground to shape and may have seen some special use. The example in figure 2 has also been pecked into shape for hafting. Typically, hafted hammers are naturally formed stones that have been slightly altered for hafting (figure 3).They may weigh several pounds and were used for heavy percussion work like breaking large flakes of flint for the creation of projectile or blade blanks.Broken examples occur in quarry sites where chert was initially broken for later use.
