ABBEY

Name: The Abbey point was named for examples recovered near Abbey Creek in Henry County, Alabama (Cambron and Hulse 1990).

Age: Recent research in Dawson County, Georgia indicated that the Abbey point dated between 4500 and 4990 B.P. (Whatley 2002:11).Early research at Abbey Creek, Alabama had yielded Abbey points in association with related Elora points had also suggested an archaic context.

Description: The Abbey is a medium-sized point measuring between 1.75 to 2.75 inches (47

.8 to 67 mm.) in length.The blade is broad and fairly thick (6 to 9 mm.) with straight to slightly incurvate edges.Blade edges are normally serrated or beveled from both sides.Shoulders are broad (32 to 49 mm.), straight, and meet the stem at rounded right angles.The stem is straight or angled slightly with an excurvate basal edge.

Distribution: Abbey points are found in western and central Georgia from Dade to Early counties.
